John C. Tune Airport (JWN) is a general aviation airport located in west Nashville in the Cockrill Bend area. It serves the needs of regional corporate and private aircraft and is owned and managed by the Airport Authority.
JWN is named in honor of the late John C. Tune, a Nashville attorney, civic leader, longtime aviation enthusiast and one of the principal developers of the modern aviation authority concept. |

Planning for the facility that would become JWN began in 1965 under Nashville's former Department of Aviation. City officials recognized the need for a general aviation airport that would better serve smaller aircraft and aid the expansion of jet service at Nashville's commercial facility.
From the time of its formation in 1970, the Nashville Airport Authority actively worked to make the proposed general aviation airport a reality. In 1972, the Authority conducted a general aviation site study. The Federal Aviation Administration approved the chosen Cockrill Bend site and the Authority received a State grant to purchase the property.
Construction began in 1983 and JWN opened in July of 1986. JWN is vital to the economic health and progress of the middle Tennessee region. It allows Nashville International Airport's ("BNA") scheduled air carrier traffic to flow with fewer constraints and congestion, and it meets important smaller aircraft aviation needs. In addition, JWN provides an excellent pilot training environment and modern facilities for the transient and corporate operator well away from the busy airspace around BNA. FBO services are provided by Corporate Flight Management, an Air BP distributor.
JWN is financially self-supporting, although some improvements are made with the assistance of state and federal grant money. Long-term lease agreements with major air carriers do not permit the commingling of BNA & JWN budgets and funds. |
A modern terminal building opened in October of 1995 at JWN. The terminal encompasses 3,600 square feet and includes a pilot's lounge, conference room and flight planning room. Parking facilities have been upgraded as well.
